Winter Dryer Vent Care

Key takeaways

  • Cold ducts collect condensation
  • Snow can bury a low vent hood
  • Winter laundry is heavy laundry
  • Clean in the fall, check after storms

What winter does

Warm, damp dryer air cools quickly in a cold duct, so moisture can collect and soak lint. A wet lint plug can restrict airflow far more than dry lint.

Heavy items like blankets and coats add to the load.

After a storm

Walk outside after heavy snow and make sure the vent hood is clear. A buried hood holds exhaust back and can freeze the flap shut. Clear it gently by hand.

If your hood is low to the ground, consider a hood mounted higher on the wall.

Prepare in the fall

A cleaning in the fall gives you a clear vent for the heavy laundry season. If you have a long run in an unheated space, ask about shortening or sealing it.

Our Cleaning Schedule tool can help you plan around the seasons.

Quick answers

Can a dryer vent freeze?

The flap can freeze shut if lint and moisture freeze around it.

Should I insulate the dryer duct?

Where your dryer maker and local code allow, insulation can reduce condensation. Check first.
